A Punn of God

Again this morning I find another great example of the Humor of God as written in the book of Jeremiah.

In Jeremiah 1:11-12 we read:

11 The word of the LORD came to me: "What do you see, Jeremiah?"
"I see the branch of an almond tree," I replied.

12 The LORD said to me, "You have seen correctly, for I am watching [a] to see that my word is fulfilled."

Have you ever wondered what the little [a] was? The footnote it is referring to says the Hebrew word fro watching sounds like the Hebrew word for almond tree. The message makes a great paraphrase:

11-12God's Message came to me: "What do you see, Jeremiah?"
I said, "A walking stick—that's all."
And God said, "Good eyes! I'm sticking with you.
I'll make every word I give you come true."

The Lord had spoken to Jeremiah when times were great under the king Josiah, but because of the great sin of Israel there was a debt that needed to be paid and things were going to change drastically. All situations change in time, some for the good and some for the bad. What is important is that we seek the Lord in the moment we are in. In that moment we are required to listen and watch for God.
